Evolving over two weeks, Jon Kinzel will sustain an onsite, multi-faceted studio practice in the gallery, creating new work daily. The artist aims to disclose his particular history of making connections between visual art, dance, and performance since 1988. The show will catalog some of Kinzel’s drawings, collages, paintings, and props that informed his shows at a variety of national and international venues. Invited guests, collaborations, and improvised performances will contribute to the process and overall installation. Viewers can expect to experience a composite of finished and in progress work.
This project will provide an unprecedented opportunity to share-in a retrospective gesture-his ongoing interest in the way kinesthetic and visceral sensibilities can be brought into engagement with visual thinking.
The exhibition’s title has a personal dimension for the artist, who sees this exhibition as a meaning-making process grounded in a profound sense of place.
Having lived on Atlantic Avenue as a teenager, Kinzel strongly identifies with the feel of the surrounding neighborhood. Kinzel will open himself to the energy of the neighborhood and of the Invisible Dog’s gallery space, which will encourage him to constantly enliven the room in subtle and active ways.
The artist will necessarily approximate a sense of privacy at times so as to avoid distraction, while at other times will welcome a more fluid interaction between people and the entire space. He is interested in the way stations — sculptural areas, set construction, stretching area, and exhibition area — will develop naturally in the space, and will form new experiments to make known the compulsion to construct and perform in temporary environments in response to his surroundings.
