Salomon Contemporary presents Liath, featuring nine new photomontage
works by Louise Donegan.

“Liath means grey in Gaelic. It links me to my Irish roots. Grey is the colour of contradiction, the nebulous meeting of black and white—the seamless point at which they blend and cease to represent absolutes. It is the colour of organic integration seen in the stones on a beach and the clouds of an oncoming storm. Liath is fossils, wisdom, and elders telling olden folklore.

I revel in the beauty of nature’s engineering and am drawn to biological forms like skeletons, wings, and rock formations. My intention is to project beauty by employing the idea that small parts comprise a larger whole, the totality of which is more than the sum of its parts. I enjoy playing with congruence in texture, colour, and shape of objects that wouldnevernormallybefoundtogether. Ihaveincorporatedold, unexposedPolaroid film. Using a mark making technique akin to painting, I manipulate the pigments before they have set. The results echo their neighbouring biological images in my works.”
