Stellan Holm Gallery presents new paintings by Clinton King.

Like the remains of a dream, Spectral Evidence explores the liminal spaces between painterly illusion and material reality. The result is a diverse range of paintings that do not seek to convey a direct meaning but explore the possibility of “open significance.” The works presented are constructed upon veil like backgrounds that suggest a perceptual depth of field. Pressing this space are lucid lines and bold marks that stand in flat contrast with an almost antagonistic zeal. In working with such variation, Clinton King not only takes full advantages of these relational gaps but also uses these blind spots as a generative point capable of perpetually obscuring and revealing itself to the viewer.

Clinton King received his MFA in 2005 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His work has recently been exhibited at Transmitter (Brooklyn, NY), The Dorsky Foundation (Brooklyn, NY), George Lawson Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Espace Art (Marseille, France), Garis and Hahn (New York, NY). Previous exhibitions include: Urban Institute For Contemporary Art (Grand Rapids, MI), Boots Contemporary Art Space (St. Louis, MO), Zaim Space (Yokohama, Japan), 1a Space Gallery (Hong Kong), Gallery 400 (Chicago, IL), Youkobo Art Space (Tokyo, Japan), and The Suburban (Chicago, IL). He was recently selected for the Yaddo Artist retreat.
