This event has ended.

Emmanuel Fremin Gallery presents Civilized & Wild, a dual exhibition featuring the works of Japanese sculptor Sayaka Ganz and the new body of works of Korean artist Young Sam Kim.

Civilized and Wild will run from June 9th to July 30th with an opening reception on Thursday, June 9th from 6 to 8pm.
Live music from Carnegie Hall’s house band Zubabu will be provided.

Sayaka Ganz was born in Yokohama, Japan and grew up living in Japan, Brazil, and Hong Kong. Currently she teaches design and drawing courses at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW).

Using reclaimed plastic objects as materials, Sayaka’s recent sculptures depict animals in motion with rich colors and energy. Her recent exhibitions include: “Danze Della Natura” – solo exhibition at the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, and “Feng Shui ~ Wind and Water” – solo exhibition in the Isle Gallery, Isle of Man. Her recent commissions include a series of four marine life sculptures for the Monerey Bay Aquarium in California and a permanent installation depicting an underwater scene with right whale and various schools of fish in the atrium of the Exploration Tower in Port Canaveral, Florida.

Born of an auditory-verbal impairment in Busan, South Korea, Youngsam Kim grew to become exceptionally perceptive to visual stimuli. Kim’s inclination for painstaking observation coupled with his poetic complexion naturally led him to practice the internalization of his highly conceptual motifs. Kim soon developed his own visual language with a depth only few could fully recognize. As Kim refined his intuition for visual literacy, he quickly developed a heightened sense of expression, gravitating toward photography to capture his enlightened, and often-evocative thoughts and emotions.

Kim re-contextualizes pieces of photography through multidimensional layering and superimposition; he calls this narrative technique a hyper-collage. The digitally collaged images are layered into surreal cityscapes – reminiscent of René Magritte and de Goya’s Magical Realism – that are meant to speak of humans stifled by thick forests of urban landscape and architecture, yearning to fly from the tangible toward a life of transcendence. While his first collection focused on humankind’s longing for truth

Born out of cellist Sebastian Baverstam and drummer Zubin Thomas, Zubabu was officially formed in the summer of 2015. Having come from extremely different musical backgrounds, long time friends Sebastian, a graduate of New England Conservatory, and Zubin, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, decided to try improvising together on the streets of Boston to have fun and see what would happen when Sebastian’s virtuosic classical technique was combined with Zubin’s groove driven modern drumming style. As crowds gathered, Sebastian and Zubin knew that their unusual brand of folk/classical dance music was something worth exploring further. Together these two musicians create music that stimulates the mind and the body, music that is harmonically engaging while at the same time makes people dance.
