This event has ended.

Pace Prints presents Dan Walsh: Prints & Multiples, featuring a new edition, a suite of monoprints and artist books.

As Walsh notes, “I paint like a printmaker: in passes.” The artist’s painting and print practices are two parts of a unified whole, informing each other within a codified language of the artist’s own creation. Made using a systematic, grid-based process, the images call to mind the meditative patterns of Tibetan mandalas or rhythmic geometries of textile arts.

In his newest woodcut, Axis (2016), the artist harnesses the reductive printmaking process, altering marks on the woodblock with each pass, in this case, drilling successively larger holes in the block. The method is highly process-driven, as once the block is altered no revisions to the image can be made. Each layer is a response to the previous pass, altering the viewer’s perception of primary colors.

Also on view will be a suite of new monoprints by the artist titled Elements. These unique works apply a programmatic approach to exploring the complexities of the archetypal building blocks of an image—the circle, square and cone; and the primary colors—blue, red and yellow. The set as a whole can be understood as a kind of musical composition where Walsh begins with simplified visual notes and expands on their complexities by applying a set of unexpected permutations.
