This event has ended.

Luise Ross Gallery presents Gail Gregg’s third solo exhibition, All That Glitters, uniting themes of consumerism and excess which has been the focus of the artist’s recent work.

Commercial packing forms are transformed using traditional gilding techniques in Gregg’s Gilded Gyre Series. A fool’s gold is created from materials typically destined for the recycling bin. These sculptures are reminiscent of totemic forms, tribal art, and space-age toys. Suddenly mysterious and consequential, they invite investigation. They serve as a reminder of a Western addiction to shiny new products with which we so casually fill our lives.

In the Bling Collage Series the artist appropriates and collages imagery culled from luxury magazines. The already over-the-top images of conspicuous consumption are transformed into hyped-up “re-advertisements,” for imaginary products, aspirational in a way that makes us question our aspirations. The collages are printed digitally and mounted behind shiny acrylic, returning the images to the glossiness of the high-end magazines they came from.

As we race to buy the newest gadget, or the must have luxury item that will change our lives, many people find themselves swamped with stuff. This stuff seems necessary to 21st century life, while threatening to overwhelm it at the same time. This is the line that Gregg walks, indulging in the allure of consumption while ultimately remembering that not all that glitters is gold.
