Praxis presents Matter, a solo show by Ivan Toth Depeña (b. 1972, Florida).
Matter is an exhibition of Depeña’s two-dimensional pieces. Though the artist has been working increasingly in the public realm, this show highlights another facet of his studio practice. The work explores the spatial qualities of painting and drawing using topography, transparency, density of light/color, and layering to achieve work that utilizes chance and intention to create an encapsulated multiverse of compositions. When experiencing the work as a whole, the spectators are introduced to the inspiration the artist gets from natural phenomena and when taking a closer look a much more complex set of micro-compositions are revealed.
Adding another layer of automation and chance to his process, Depeña works with software to create random patterns and generate lines from drawings that are in turn used to create three-dimensional cutting models. These models are used to cut into the work utilizing computer-controlled machinery designed for industrial fabrication. This excavation of the paintings reveals hidden layers of color and texture, creating geographic allusions.
