Margaret Cogswell & Ellen Driscoll “Soundings”
Kentler International Drawing Space
This event has ended.
Soundings is a site-specific multimedia drawing and video installation by two New York-based artists. Responding to scenes and conditions in and around Red Hook, Brooklyn, Margaret Cogswell and Ellen Driscoll jointly explore the impacts of industry and human consumption on local ecosystems. Their overlapping imagery blends observational study of the urban waterfront with ancient influences such as Asian landscape drawing and the naturalistic murals of Pompeii.
Both Cogswell and Driscoll regularly address themes of water, pollution and waste in their work. While their styles are aesthetically distinct, their large and small-scale works taken together give a dynamic overview of our evolving natural world. The resulting visual dialogue invites audience reflection and discussion on the wider impact of global climate change. In this way the viewer becomes a witness and participant in the artists’ deep consideration of Red Hook’s past and present. A brochure with an essay by Lilly Wei accompanies the exhibition.
