This event has ended.

A.I.R. Gallery presents Urban Road Kill, a solo exhibi- tion of new work by Barbara Siegel.

In her new work, Urban Road Kill artist Barbara Siegel will exhibit twenty drawings in various sizes and media, including chalk pastel, colored pencils, charcoal, and charcoal powder. In three display cases Siegel will also have on view the run-over flattened artifacts that inspired the drawings.

Siegel, known for biographical multimedia installations inspired by the lives of renown individuals such as natural scientists and sideshow performers now pays homage to inanimate objects of quotidian use in their flattened form. A dust pan, a car’s side-view mirror, a miner’s helmet, an aerosol can, in this tranformed state, are mementos now devoid of assigned purpose. Eyeglasses, their frames madly distorted, lenses absent; a container for dust no longer capable of containing; a helmet unable to accommodate a human head — these are neo-geological artifacts, composed of elements fossilized in the stratum of the street by the force of vehicular activity passing over/crushing them. They mediate between nature and culture, their utility mocked by loss of three dimensionality, yet reborn, resurrected, ascended to a vertical plane through Siegel’s meticulous drawings—renderings that capture the non–functional beauty of their non-function.

Barbara Siegel lives in New York City and has been represented by A.I.R. Gallery for twelve years. This is her fifth solo show at A.I.R.. Siegel is an adjunct Associate Professor at Parsons, the New School for Design.
