Leonard Tourné Gallery presents “Kaleidoscope,” an exhibition of pigments and oil paintings by Denmark-born artist Christel Ibsen. opens

Best known for her realist-style portraits and seascapes, Ibsen’s work has been compared to J.M.W. Turner for her mastery of color and the intuitiveness with which she deftly blends genres and mediums. Ibsen’s work is influenced by her studies in fresco painting at New York’s National Academy and Isabel O’Neil, an institute for the decorative arts in the Venetian Style.

Ibsen has worked in New York, London and Paris with designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Dior, YSL, and Jean Paul Gaultier, filming their fashion shows. With Terence Donovan as her director, she produced video magazines for Depeche Mode, Marie Claire and Dior as well as the 1990 TV documentary for Harper’s Bazaar’s “Celebration of Women.”

Her production company, Outrévisions, quickly grew from covering fashion shows to organizing special events, such as the 40th Anniversary of Christian Dior. This work culminated in projects completed for the White House, for which Ibsen was honored by then President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

It was not until a genetic condition caused sudden and rapid hearing loss that Ibsen threw herself into painting and allowed her new talent to flourish.

Since then, Ibsen has exhibited her work in more than forty solo and group shows, including at the National Gallery, Ritz Carlton Gallery and Morgan Gallery in Grand Cayman; Le Presbytère and Au P’tit Normand in Normandy, France; and her native Denmark. Her work belongs to private collections in Denmark, Dubai, Holland, France, England, Italy, Portugal, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan and Grand Cayman.

Ibsen’s deep commitment to charity has led her to contribute through her artwork to a host of non-profit organizations, including Operation Smile, American Friends of Dental Volunteers for Israel, Cayman Hospice Care and the Peace and Security program of Global Action to Prevent War and Armed Conflict, a United Nations affiliate.
