This event has ended.

Van der Plas Gallery presents new monochrome paintings by Anders Knutsson.

In 2014, Anders Knutsson changed the DNA of his monochrome paintings by collaborating with the Swedish weaver Hanna Kristine Isaksson. The weaver created a series of handwoven linens with variations on traditional colors and patterns for Knutsson to use. Her Nordic weaving techniques with its textures and patterns has created new kinds of surfaces and structures, which allow Knutsson to alter the fundamental conditions for his monochrome painting. This fusion between art and traditional Nordic craft has resulted in new painterly expressions of color and light. This exhibition will feature new paintings on both hand-woven and traditional Belgian linen.

Anders Knutsson is a Swedish-born American painter based in Brooklyn, New York. He is best known for his deeply pigmented monochrome paintings. His works are in collections around the world including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, MA, Museum of Modern Art and Sven-Harrys Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.

The artist is involved in every stage of his work from mixing the pigments with wax and oil, to making the frames and stretchers, to commissioning traditional weavers to fabricate the linen he uses. The individuality of Anders’ work hinges on his ability to use transparent layers of paint, thinly applied to unveil subtle depths – allowing the viewer to see beyond the surface, into a deeper more reflective space.
