Luhring Augustine presents Sculpture, an exhibition of new work by Josh Smith. This marks the artist’s sixth solo exhibition with the gallery.
Smith’s practice is defined by a spirit of restless and relentless experimentation. He thrives on risk, and his work resists being easily categorized or defined by a signature style. Smith is fundamentally a painter of abstraction, but he also creates figurative paintings, collages, sculptures, drawings, prints, books, and ceramics. He tends to work with certain motifs in a serial and repetitive manner that is exhaustive in its exploration of formal possibilities, and his varied and prolific output enables a continuous investigation and refinement of ideas. With this new body of work, Smith seeks to question certain parameters of painting and sculpture.
