Julian Lorber (b.1985) is a graduate of the Massachusetts College of the Arts, he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He has shown broadly in New York including recent shows at The Active Space as part of Exchange Rates, the Williamsburg Art Historical Center, C24 Gallery and Margaret Thatcher Projects, and internationally including solo show, “Externalities” at Gallery Lot 10 in Brussels, Belgium and an upcoming solo show at Galerie Ernst Hilger in Vienna, Austria. His work has been recently been covered in the media by TimeOut NY, ArtFCity, Hyperallergic, ROOMS magazine (London), and Musee Magazine.

Lorber’s work, while often abstract, is deeply concerned with the natural environment. His signature style of built up surfaces call attention to air pollution by mimicking the effect of soot buildup on brick façades through the use of calculated and skillfully applied airbrush gradients to layered surfaces. His fantastic color range and adept deployment of technique allow him to create paintings that both amaze and invite contemplation, compelling the viewer on both a formal and conceptual level.

Mark Dorf (b. 1988) graduated Magna Cum Laude from The Savannah College of Art and Design with a B.F.A in Photography and Sculpture. As a Brooklyn based artist he shows both locally and internationally including recent shows at The Lima Museum of Contemporary Art, Lima, the Mobile World Centre, Barcelona, and Harbor Gallery, New York. Dorf’s work is also included in the Savannah College of Art and Design permanent collection.

Dorf employs a mix of photography and digital media, exploring what he calls “the post-analogue experience,” namely, society’s interactions with the digital world and its relationship to our natural origins. Broadly speaking his work examines the influence of the information age, and explores this theme through the aforementioned combination of media. His most recent works, the “Emergence” series, depict how we encounter, translate, and understand our surroundings through the filter of science, math and technology.

While the two artists employ light in very different ways, both use abstract representationalism, especially through their application of color, as a way to communicate in their works. The concept of a second nature arose as method of understanding their works together in the sense that they call into question the almost automatic way in which the Western industrialized world has come to take its environment for granted, but also in that work by both artists demonstrate an alternative view or a second way of looking at landscape: Lorber’s more science fiction and Dorf’s more data science, both inescapable facets of human behavior.
