Colin Ruel is a self-taught artist originally from the fishing village of Menemsha on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. He now lives and paints in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. His recent work strives to reclaim and deconstruct religious and spiritual symbolism to its most pure root by trading the language of the antiquated religious journey and new age spiritual journey for the personal subconscious journey. Ruel’s descending scales of color echo the beats of shamanic “journeying” which incorporates the use of a drum played with seven beats per second - a practice used to lull the brain into a subconscious state. The colorful forms and patterns within Ruel’s paintings are what the artist considers to be “shadows of realizations within the subconscious”.
Eric Lee Bowman is a third generation New Yorker, third generation photographer, and fourth generation painter. The artist lives in his grandfather’s old suite in a converted hotel building in Times Square and works in his studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. For this exhibition, Bowman shows recent process-focused cyanotype blueprint images and monochromatic paintings. Bowman’s hereditary knowledge of photographic chemical processes allows him to experiment with light-sensitive emulsion, crumpled paper, and light to produce unique abstract cyanotypes. His recent paintings continue his minimalist color palette. For these paintings, the artist uses discarded house paint and drop cloth canvases, manipulating the paint with mops, broomsticks, and his hands. At Calico, Bowman will execute a wall-sized painting installation to further play with the scale and weight of this painting-based work.
Brooklyn-based Jon Legere creates paper and paint collages that mix geometric shapes of bold color with dissected found imagery. A form of urban recycling, the work is a nod to our oversaturated media diets. Source material for Legere’s collages comes from common publications found at local retail stores, coffee shops, and newspaper stands. The artist cuts away all distractions of recognizable imagery, leaving only absent memories and deconstructed outlines of shapes and texture from the contours of deconstruction. Vivid and dense assemblages of shape and color are the painterly result of this process.
