Dan Shiro was born in 1947 in Kyoto, and grew up in Otsu, Shiga Japan. He graduated from the Department of Cultural History, Faculty of Letters, Doshisha University in 1972. He is the winner of numerous awards including the Advertisers Award of the 3rd Humor Advertising Contest (1989), the Visual Award of the 4th Humor Advertising Contest, (1990) and the Excellence of Yomiuri International Cartoon Contest (1999). In 1988 he founded Shigotoba D A N.
Dan became a professor of the Graduate school of Science for Human Services, Ritsumeikan University in 2001, and later went on to become a member of the Project of Support Activities to the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. He is a member of Corporation Japan Cartoonists Association Aggregate and his work has been displayed at the Panel Manga exhibition for the last 10 years.
