This event has ended.

For his inaugural New York show, Fougeirol presents two new bodies of work; Peintures avec la pluie (paintings with rain) and the Untitled series of White paintings. With each, Fougeirol engages a series of unique, personal gestures to arrive at his final works.

Les Peintures avec la pluie are created in-and-out of the studio. Starting with meticulously layered oil paint, Fougeirol creates a skin he then exposes to rain. Patterns and crater-like surfaces emerge from the impact of the water drops. Seams and creases spawn throughout the surfaces. The tightening and releasing of air seems to form an innate logic, a semblance of an incidental composition. With each work the viewer questions whether the composition is contingent on chance or intentional configuration.

Alongside Peintures avec la pluie, Fougeirol continues to explore his signature large-scale Untitled (White Paintings). Reminiscent of printmaking and early photographic experimentation, the paintings are borne out of laying or throwing ropes, folding sheets and “recording” these movements with paint which are then transferred onto raw linen canvas.

Fougeirol’s paintings are like effigies, with powerful spiritual overtones. The impressions brought upon his materials leave an aura with the viewer. The reduction of color, lack of technology, and absence of text allows process and material are the main vehicles to communicate the physicality of the works.
