Van Der Plas Gallery presents River’s Edge a solo exhibition of large abstract paintings by Hawai’i and New York based artist - Debra Drexler. We believe that this is a remarkable exhibit by a remarkable artist worthy of critical recognition. This body of work is the culmination of a year that she has spent painting in New York. It is unique in its use of color, scale and luminosity.

Since her solo exhibition at White Box a decade ago, she has been regularly exhibiting in New York with solo and group exhibitions. Drexler’s work has been internationally recognized by solo exhibitions at museums in Hawai’i including Honolulu Museum, and over a hundred exhibits around the world. Her work has been gaining traction in New York, and this exhibition marks her most significant work to date.

Debra Drexler is deeply engaged in the critical discussion around the emergence of abstraction in New York today. She is the co-curator of New New York, which will be held at the University of Hawai’i, where she is a Professor of Painting in October, 2015. This exhibition of 30 New York based abstract painters including Julie Mehretu, Terry Winters, Jonathan Allmaier and many others who are part of the resurgence of abstraction is a cutting edge inquiry into the field. Her research into the ideas and principles of 21st Century abstraction inform her practice to create critically informed, unique painting that speaks to our time.
