Living between Australia and the United Kingdom, Christian Thompson is one of Australia’s most internationally exhibited artists and a significant force in contemporary art today. His creative growth, gained through an understanding of his Bidjara (Indigenous people of central South-West Queensland) heritage, is deeply enriching to all Australians. And yet, Thompson’s vibrantly performative self-portraits speak to a wider audience with a penchant for seductive flamboyance, while also unraveling layers of symbolic significance with respect to personal identity, memory & landscape.
This exhibition, Thompson’s first in New York, offers up a curated selection of photographs spanning eight years. In the last 12 months alone he has had work hanging in The Royal Academy, London, Berlin, Germany and Wellington, New Zealand. His practice is represented in every major art museum in Australia and many private collections Australia-wide and internationally.
