This event has ended.

ArtNowNY presents “Organic Distortions”, a solo exhibition of new works by New York based artist Chris “Cycle” St. John in what will be his first solo exhibition with the gallery.

After 25 years of spray paint CYCLE has decided to go in a different direction to produce more refined and collectible works with an eye on the former stages of his own career. Heavily rooted in the street culture, including graffiti, skateboarding, design, punk rock music and magazines, his work serves both high art and low culture. His subjects, usually drawn from personal experience, are tightly interwoven with youth culture, city life, mass cultural identity.

CYCLE’s new works are an exploration of form and color loosely based upon concepts adapted from his graffiti background. With graffiti lettering, in particular, he tried to apply the concepts of “exaggerated” and “distorted” forms alluding to “motion” and “experimentation with color and pattern”. This desire to investigate the shifting outline of both physical and hypothetical aspects of reality ultimately lead to a middle way between abstract and figurative art. Animals, fragments of images, reflections, animated shapes are all part of the same ongoing conversation that begins with an organic progression of the individual vision of the artist.
