This event has ended.

The Godwin-Ternbach Museum announces a major gift of exemplary American and European photography from the 19th and 20th century, which will be exhibited alongside “Masters of American Photography,” photographs on loan from the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania.

The donated work, “Photographs from the Matthew R. Bergey Collection,” an outstanding group of thirty-six photographs by twenty-six photographers, will substantially enhance the museum’s growing collection of photography. Shown concurrently with the Bergey Collection, “Masters of American Photography” is a cache of photographs by significant American photographers of the 20th century.

Together these two exhibitions include works that elegantly represent the history of photography from its 19th-century beginnings to the end of the 20th century. The Reading Museum’s “Masters of American Photography” includes iconic images by Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, and Dorothea Lange. The Bergey Collection represents a remarkable array of images from pioneers of the medium to modern and contemporary photographers from Eugéne Atget and Walker Evans to Henri Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon, and Laurie Simmons.

Public programs include a lecture series beginning on opening night, Thursday, April 23rd, by Reading museum curator, Scott A. Schweigert; continues with a talk on the Bergey Collection by museum director and curator Amy Winter; followed by discussion on photographic techniques titled “Eyes and Minds on a Group of Photographs” by expert Larry Gottheim.
