JANET BORDEN, INC. presents ALT.TERRAIN the gallery’s opening exhibition for our 28th season. Landscapes of varying modalities are the nominal subject.
The long history of landscape photography extends into our digital age. The photographic concerns that have fueled artists’ interest in the natural world continue to present themselves in a variety of ways.
Some are straight images, like Elger Esser’s Italian vista. Others are humorous, such as Martin Parr’s Ocean Dome, an indoor beach in Tokyo. Jan Groover’s large color triptych and Fred Cray’s digial overlays examine other methods of approaching the landscape as subject.
Artists like Macduff Everton and Jim Dow utilize the panoramic frame to contain or control the expansive subject. The myriad approaches of photography to landscape provide a panoply of views and visions of the world at hand. The results are engaging, smart, and often beautiful.
