This event has ended.

The inaugural edition of NEWD will bring together strong local curatorial voices –among them artist collectives, project spaces, nonprofits, and artist-run galleries–to share 7,000 sq ft of open warehouse space during Bushwick Open Studios.

A counterpoint to the existing art fair model, NEWD will feature diverse participants with ambitious, experimental programming. The event will also host talks addressing artist economics in today’s art market. In addition, Raul Murão has been commissioned to create site-specific sculptures.

By championing grassroots, content-driven initiatives, NEWD aims to invigorate the fair model, according to fair directors Kate Bryan and Kibum Kim. “These participants are the people giving the best emerging artists of today their first shows,” Kim says. Bryan concurs: “This project highlights an inter-connected artist and curator community developing intrepid programming for their collectively-run spaces.” A response to the expansion of the art market and the erosion of the traditional gallery system, the fair will foster a conversation about alternative ways to engage and support emerging artists. NEWD will also promote artists’ interests by offering negotiated resale royalty agreements.

With its vibrant art scene, Bushwick is a natural fit for the fair, Kim says. “Our aim is to bring a new audience to Bushwick to see a dynamic community of artists and gallerists that we haven’t seen since SoHo in the 80s.” NEWD’s location and timing reflects its artist-centric mission, re-contextualizing the art fair by situating it in the territory of art production.
