Artist’s statement:
As an art student at Boston University the focus was on observation. We drew and painted from life; it was necessary to consider all aspects of relationship – color, value, form, to compose well-made pictures. Later, when I was free to decide for myself what ideas to pursue, observation persisted but broadened. I began to note intensity in people at the beach; while setting up small households they were oblivious to others around them. I enjoyed describing the humor and awkwardness inherent in these scenes, working from drawings and photographs done on site.

Dance has always interested me, however, mostly as an observer or audience member, but also as happy participant when the opportunity arises. The series started with Swing as the subject (something I have personally enjoyed). Later it became more about movement alone. Tango as my current subject is particularly appealing because the dance itself is about intensity. Communication, passion, and abandon fuel the pictures, which are a pathway to the sensuality of the paint and the pleasure of color.

I have reflected my personal experiences throughout my years of painting, but now I am most interested in exploring the possibilities and richness of the paint itself and how I can connect these ideas to the larger questions of form and composition. I see intimacy-tango as a metaphor for, or an expression of, the passionate connection/movement between artist and paint. Intimacy and abstraction, an amazing dichotomy, one of those situations where you move closer and closer, but may never get there.
