SHOW ROOM | Gowanus presents Incidents: 1969-2014, a solo exhibition of photographs by Steel Stillman. The exhibition coincides with the publication of Stillman’s new artist book of the same title.

The photographs in Incidents: 1969-2014 come from an ongoing series that Stillman began working on in the late 2000s. Based on snapshot-like images that the artist has taken and found over the past 40 years—to which he has since added black, hand-drawn shapes—these pictures, like memory itself, rewrite the past from the perspective of the present. Considered as a whole, the tightly cropped images in Stillman’s Incidents series highlight the limits of photographic information and construct a kind of abstract documentary of a world that no longer exists—if indeed it ever did.

Steel Stillman was born in New York in 1955, attended Middlebury College, and received a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 1979. He has had solo exhibitions at Galerie van Gelder (Amsterdam), Mandarin Gallery (Los Angeles), and Envoy (New York), among others. Recent New York group shows include: The Bigger Picture at The Artists Institute; Come Together: Surviving Sandy at Industry City; and The Best of 2012 at Soloway. In 2013, his photographs were featured in SHOW ROOM’s three-person exhibition Dream Out. Currently his work is included in Minimal Baroque at Ronnesbaeksholm (Nestved, Denmark).

Stillman is also a writer and a contributing editor of Art in America. He lives and works in New York and teaches at the School of Visual Arts.
