A.I.R. Gallery presents Color All the Way Through, an exhibition of new work by Fellowship artist Susan Stainman, on view in the Fellowship Gallery.

Susan Stainman creates process-based sculptures starting from a love of fabrics. In addition to Stainman’s desire to disrupt hierarchical categories within art, the color, texture and tactility of these domestic materials have long been an interest. Formally based in her vision, she intuitively investigates each fabric and its interplay with other materials, such as plexiglass and steel. Utilizing straightforward repeated sewing gestures she creates works of primary shapes and bright colors.

Stainman’s use of fluorescent colors references childhood, specifically the idea of play and the immediacy of childlike experiences. She is also interested in how color, form, and space inform each other and their subsequent emotional qualities. Her work is rooted in late 20th century American art, cra , and architecture. Bringing together attention to both the human form and the forgotten spaces of our environments, Stainman invites us into the possibility of her inner world: playful, immediate, sensual, and emotive.

Susan Stainman is a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art in London and Brown University. She has exhibited locally and in England and has attended residencies at Vermont Studio Center and CAC at Woodside in upstate New York.
