Sikkema Jenkins & Co. presents three new videos by Burt Barr on view in the back galleries from January 23 through March 1, 2014. The videos, premiering at the gallery, include the large black and white projection work entitled Tire Treads, and two works in color displayed on monitors: Red Brick Wall and Swirling Water (all 2013).
A stringent believer in traditional cinematic techniques and the single take, Burt Barr creates simple but witty videos that explore conceptual aspects of the medium. Barr’s early video works were shown at film festivals in Montreal, Berlin, Toronto, San Sebastian, Melbourne, and Rotterdam, as well as on PBS. He has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally with solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul; and P.S. 1, Long Island City. Other installations have taken place at The Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany; The Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the USF Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa, FL; and MUDAM, Luxembourg.
Barr is the recipient of numerous awards, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, The American Film Institute, The Andrea Frank Foundation, The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, The Foundation for Contemporary Art, and The Massachusetts Council on the Arts & Humanities.
