The Painting Center presents an exhibition of recent paintings by Marianne Gagnier. Marianne Gagnier uses dynamic gestures and a lush palette to create abstract paintings which evoke the inscape – specific, poetic inner states. Color forces and expansive movements are the engines of her process. Gagnier embraces spontaneity and directness to create dynamic work that evokes subjects allusive to memories, places and archetypes.
She states: “These paintings begin from a haunting – a color or two that linger in mind and become a tuning fork for the composition. I swim with and against the energies of the painting. Meaning appears, usually suddenly, at the end of a process which is fluid and sometimes tumultuous - due to efforts to unify or to wipe out. I identify the subject of the work in the aftermath of its appearance.”
Marianne Gagnier was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1955 and received a B.A. from Yale College in 1977 and an M.F.A. from Parsons School of Design in 1993. She has had one-person exhibitions at Thomas Deans and Company, Maurice Arlos Gallery, and Prince Street Gallery. Selected group exhibitions include: Thompson Giroux Gallery, Sideshow Gallery, Repetti Gallery, Western Carolina University, Haverford College, Ingber Gallery, Cedar Crest College, the New York Studio School, P.S. #1, “The Times Square Show” and “The Dinner Party Project”. Her work is in numerous private collections and the permanent collections of Western Carolina University, Bryn Mawr College and the Public Securities Association.
