Solo exhibition by Peter Sis, an internationally acclaimed artist, illustrator, writer and filmmaker, focuses on the artist’s poetic renditions of men’s unending quest for discovery. On view is a wide selection of his original drawings, watercolors and quashes re-telling and re-imagining the stories of people, which changed with their adventures spirit the course of the history.
In the book Follow the Dream: The Story of Christopher Columbus from 1991 Sis’s is portraying Columbus from his boyhood to his first landing in the Americas. He bridges between reality and imagination with illustrations recalling the maps, charts and paintings of Columbus’s own era.
Galileo Galilei is masterfully presented and illustrated by Sis in the book called The Starry Messenger, published by Frances Foster Books at Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1996. Another example is Tree of Life Charles Darwin, a book depicting the life of naturalist, geologist and thinker, issued by the same publisher in 2003. The original artwork of the most recent book, where Sis re-imagined the Exupery classic, Little Prince, called The Pilot and the Little Prince: The Life of Antoine de Saint – Exupery issued in May of 2014 will be exhibited for the first time in its entirety at the exhibition at the BBLA.
In all of this work Sis first carries out an extensive research about the subject and its times to give reader correct factual information; however these are presented with the degree of unprecedented beauty and imagination. Expert draughtsman Sis is also a master of color and its expressive potential, using the color scale and its effects to support the narrative and its flow. Sis’s books are intended for adults and children alike, for all those for whom the narrative in the arts, be it visual or verbal, can be seen as the way to an unbridled aesthetic enrichment.
