Cindy Rucker Gallery presents an exhibition of works by New York artist CJ Collins.

The exhibition will feature Collins’ paintings, which demonstrate her ability to convey the energy and essence of objects by giving metaphysical qualities a physical form.

The French philosopher, Henri Bergson once wrote, “There is an outer reality that nonetheless has been given to our spirit directly…this reality is pure movement. There are no inelastic things, but only evolving things, no fixed conditions that stay as they are, but only conditions that change their state.” This sentiment can easily be applied to the work of CJ Collins, an artist who playfully toys with the tension between form and line.

In Night Music (2011), the artist is at play. Within the ample space allowed by the size of the paper, Collins is allowed to explore and dance, concentrate and meander, approach and flee. Throughout this Dionysian composition, the only dependable aspect is
constant flux.

Collins’ ability to give a voice to her pieces carries throughout the body of her work. The smaller pieces in particular have an organic quality that defines her point of view. The lines vary from the illusion of frantic movement frozen in space to a calm and steady
force behind the paint.

CJ Collins received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the Santa Barbara Art Institute in 1974. Collins relocated to the East coast in 1977 after a chance encounter with Jack Tworkov, a visiting lecturer at UCSB, inspired her to move to New York City. Upon arriving in New York Collins took up residency in an old warehouse space in TriBeCa, which she established as her home and studio. For nearly four decades Collins has been steadily producing work from her space in TriBeCa and showing in both solo and group exhibitions.
