A.I.R. Gallery presents Rex Works, an exhibition of new work by Francie Shaw.

Rex Works is a series of postcard-size paintings/collages. Each piece starts with a snippet from the daily comic strip Rex Morgan, M.D. The starting points are not used narratively but rather for visual extensions of the stylized images. Shaw finds the extreme noir-ish shadows, wide eyes and careful hairdos unexplainable in their own context and uses them without explanation in these works. They conjure up unexpected spaces and associations, while often retaining the intimacy of the comics, exaggerating the expressive elements. Some pieces are painted on actual, old postcards, adding another layer reference and reassembled association.

Old travel postcards, scenic views, or favorite paintings from museums visits add to the vocabulary. Some of these pieces retain the black and white tones of the daily comics, while others are wildly colorful. There is affection for the turgid normality of Rex’s world, but, more, we sense the intense pleasure Shaw feels in exploring the newly seen impossible spaces she finds by jumping out of that world. There will be a poetry reading of collaborations based on the Rex works from area poets.
