Near Carnegie Hall and Central Park THE ART STUDENTS LEAGUE OF NEW YORK on 57th Street is a very important school and has spurred many important movements throughout its history. Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns were two of the many influential artists who came into being there. Tuition is low and studio space is cheap even today. Founded in 1875 by artists and for artists, the Art Students League of New York has been instrumental in shaping America’s legacy in the fine arts. Many renowned artists have honed their skills at the League, which is dedicated to sustaining the great tradition of training artists. Today, more than 2,500 students of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels, study at the League each month.

Kazuko Miyamoto, owner and operator of the landmark gallery onetwentyeight, was an early student of the league, and today Fumiko Kashiwagi currently attends. While painting, Fumiko Kashiwagi tries to create new colors of her own exploring a combination of pastel and acrylic paints, she represents the emotional scene of nature based on her unique color, delicate use of tone, gradation, and shade is used sensitively.

American/Swedish photographer Jesper Haynes, has now been invited by League alumnus Kazuko Miyamoto to visit 57th street with her and introduce him to it. Haynes moved to New York in 1982. Jesper has since established himself as an artist who is documenting his unique lifestyle through photography. His photographs are part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, Sweden. He shares his time between New York (where he is based), Bangkok, Stockholm, and Tokyo.
