This event has ended.

490 Atlantic presents an exhibition of recent paintings by Michael Randall. This is the artist's first exhibition with the gallery and his first one-person show in New York in over ten years.

The exhibition will feature more than twenty intimately-scaled oil paintings, most from 2012 and 2013. These smaller abstract works represent a new exploration for Randall, who recently had a successful two-person exhibition, with the artist Victor Kord, of large-scale paintings at Durst (1155 Sixth Avenue) in November of 2012.

For over three decades, Randall has been making abstract paintings -- as well as music, poetry and feature films -- in New York City. The connection to music is an important one for the artist, who explains that above all, his paintings and drawings "aspire to the state of music." Like music, they are produced through equal parts improvisation and careful planning. Visual ideas and systems are rearranged and interchanged until the tensions and disparate elements fall imperfectly into a satisfying and/or dissonant relationship, and a sort of music begins to take shape.

Randall's method is recombinant -- ideas leap freely from painting to painting, but what results in each is a strong, unexpected, singular image. One that's willing to live or die according to its own rules.
