Scott Teplin “Greasy Sinkers”

RYAN LEE

This event has ended.

RYAN LEE presents “Scott Teplin: Greasy Sinkers,” an exhibition in the project space by the Brooklyn-based artist. Influenced by his father, a doctor, Teplin creates anatomical drawings that employ a comic book/pop sensibility. The conflation of scientific subject matter with a somewhat irreverent style results in brightly colored, sometimes abject works that both seduce and repulse. The sculptural work, “Greasy Sinker,” depicting a selection of miniature donuts will be installed in the middle of the room. The title comes from Hanson Crockett Gregory, a 17th-century American sea captain who invented the pastry. By taking as his subject a banal commodity such as food, Teplin proposes a re- examinination of everyday objects, drawing the viewer’s attention to the anthropomorphic, orifice-like quality of the doughnut.

A selection of Teplin’s works on paper— meticulously executed drawings in watercolor and ink— will also be on view. Produced in the exacting style of scientific medical illustrations, the works on paper also reference the levity of cartoons and are complemented by the use of various typographies that evoke the iconography of advertising. This ongoing exploration of the dichotomy between high and low culture, seriousness and humor, the abstract and the representational, results in a playful investigation of the way we perceive our modern-day world.

Teplin, also an accomplished bookmaker and animator, has exhibited widely in major museums, including Aldrich Museum, CT; Arkansas Art Center; Boston Athenaeum; Bronx Museum, NY; Brooklyn Academy of Music, NY; Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; Chelsea Art Museum, NY; The Drawing Center, NY; Kunst Werke Berlin, Germany; Mewo Kunsthalle, Germany; MoMA PS1, NY; Museum of Art & Design, NY; New York Academy of Art; and The New York Public Library. His work can be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; Cornell University, NY; Harvard University; Museum of Modern Art, NY; The New Museum, NY; New York Public Library; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; Smithsonian Institution, DC; Spencer Art Museum, KS; Stanford University, CA; Walker Art Center, MN; Wesleyan University, CT; and Yale University, CT.
