BravinLee programs presents an exhibition of work by Leslie Baum, Stacy Fisher, and Matt Miller. These artists share an ambivalence towards being easily categorized by using sculptural form, painted surfaces, and an interplay between the wall and floor. Within this ambiguous space between painting sculpture and installation, each of the three starts with initial anchoring fragments that they regard as building blocks in order to create a fully realized, coherent statement.

Leslie Baum’s work includes large scale paintings, informal pop up drawings, and standing floor paintings. These fragments are placed on floor, wall, or table top as a group, creating a state of flux between part and whole. This body of work revels in accidental and inadvertent gestures. Stacy Fisher uses mostly hydrocal to create sculptures, often paired with custom-made pedestals that vary in significance. She is interested in describing space and creating meaning through a cumulative effort of form, placement, and painting. Often her works are conceived in groups and rely on the context of the group for interpretation. Matt Miller paints on polystyrene and then treats the paint with chemicals. The application of paint becomes secondary to the result of the process, which enhances, warps, and kills the original painting. Miller also uses pre-built components as building blocks to create a piece.

Leslie Baum lives and works in Chicago. She has had solo exhibitions at Devening projects, LVL3 Gallery, and Tony Wright Gallery. She recently had an installation in a show at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Her work is in the Chicago Art Institute’s permanent collection and has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America and the Chicago Tribune.

Stacy Fisher lives and works in Brooklyn. She has been in two-person shows at Cleopatra’s and Regina Rex in Brooklyn and Weekend Gallery in Los Angeles, as well as several group shows. In 2011 she received a visual arts fellowship from The Edward F. Albee Foundation. Her exhibition at Regina Rex was also a Critics’ Pick in Artforum.

Matt Miller is a Brooklyn based artist who received his M.F.A. from Pratt in 2002. He has exhibited his work at 106 Green in Brooklyn, as well as The Active Space and The Loom. He was recently profiled in ArtsInBushwick and was included in ArtInfo’s 20 Must-See Studios in Bushwick.
