This event has ended.

First Street Gallery presents a new exhibition of recent works on paper by artist Rallou Malliarakis.

The title of this exhibition pertains as much to the method applied in creating these drawings as it does to the actual images resulting from the process. Charcoal, compressed charcoal, and pastel are used in a painterly fashion. Some of the compositions are architectural in feeling, rendered with bold, graphic treatment, while others suggest free-flowing forms that appear disconnected from a tangible source. Textural, hands-on smudging and careful application of the media define the approach Malliarakis has cultivated in these expressive drawings. On display are seventeen works on paper, ten formatted on large sheets, most of which address the relationship between nature and the city as they exist in communion with each other. Ways in which natural elements are reflected in urban settings appear in many of the pieces that are on view at First Street Gallery. Fragments and details of pavements, street corners, or sidewalks serve as compelling subject matter; shadows, both lyrical and dramatic, are cast onto varying surfaces in urban environments at different times of day.

How industrial materials and natural forms co-mingle and are transformed by light is the dominant theme throughout this exhibition. The images are brought to life free of purely factual description; despite the artist's figurative references, her drawings convey an abstract quality that suggests intriguing ambiguities in this surprising series.
