This event has ended.

Laurence Miller Gallery is pleased to present two one-person shows of photographs made in the mid 1970’s that take natural forms as their point of departure and through the medium of photography transform what might have appeared as ordinary trees and leaves into abstract and playful pictures. They are more interventions than documentation. Both photographers, Ray K. Metzker and Michael Becotte, live in the Philadelphia area.

In his 1974 series WHIMSY, Ray K. Metzker juxtaposed four small out of focus views of leaves into abstract diamond shaped collages which read like Rorschach tests, completely open to each viewer’s interpretation. Some suggest spinning birds, others a rocking horse, even perhaps a conquistador. With only a handful ever exhibited, this is the first time that 36 of these unique works will be presented together.

Ray K. Metzker celebrates his 82nd birthday this September. This modern master has exhibited and been collected globally for over 50 years, and a travelling career retrospective, shown at the Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Getty Center, now opens this September 21 at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle and runs through January 5, 2014.
