This event has ended.

On Friday, May 24, mph will celebrate the opening of a new duo exhibit, Lush Natura, featuring the artwork of Tatiana Suarez and Jason Levesque. Lush Natura is the culmination of these artists’ exploration into the living world of the lesser loved fauna. In this show, Tati and Jason both draw inspiration from slimy slugs to universally loathed critters. Their artwork reflects the artists’ mutual fascination from opposite ends of what is typically considered beautiful, as they create stunning juxtapositions between big-eyed beauties and bug-eyed beasties.

Tatiana Suarez is a Brooklyn-based Miami native. Her charming style is distinctive — first, the trademark eyes that draw the viewer into a beautiful and surreal world. Suarez takes full advantage of the oil paint’s ability to create creamy, soft images on canvas. Rich with symbols that stem from her Brazilian and El Salvadorian heritage, subjects appear as if they are under water, frozen in lovely stillness. The doe-eyed figures look childlike, but also exude sexual overtones, ornamented with plants, insects and other unsettling accompaniments. Beauty is presented concurrently with exotic — even creepy — creatures to create enchanted narratives.

Jason Levesque’s art borrows heavily from the world of biology and explores themes of organic fluids, parasitic life forms and the underlying structures of the human anatomy. While commonly regarded with disgust, Jason attempts to present these themes in new and aesthetically compelling ways mixing elements of repulsive and attractive imagery in such a way as to grab the viewers attention.
