"Body Double: Jasper Johns / Bruce Nauman" examines the role of the body as both image and implement, focusing on a selection of painting, drawing, and sculpture from the 1960s and 70s. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the show and offer the first in-depth examination of this subject with an essay by guest curator Jeffrey Weiss, Senior Curator at the Guggenheim Museum.
For both artists, the body is not simply a tool used for particular ends. Rather, it is the use of the body, and the human form itself, which becomes their subject matter. Johns incorporates both the form and the ‘imprint’ of his own body in a variety of media, ranging from plaster and resin casts, to transfer drawings done in ink or baby oil. In Nauman’s work, the artist’s body is used as a direct instrument, recorded, traced and manipulated in various media, including film and photography, and it can also serve as an absurd standard of measurement in a series of works on paper and in sculpture.
Twelve works have been culled from private and public collections to create Body Double: Jasper Johns / Bruce Nauman. Highlights include Johns’s Painting Bitten by a Man (1961) on loan from The Museum of Modern Art, New York and Nauman’s sculpture Neon Templates of the Left Half of My Body Taken at Ten-Inch Intervals (1966) on loan from the Philip Johnson Glass House Collection, New Canaan, Connecticut.
