This event has ended.

On Equal Terms combines audio, poetry, personal witness, artifacts, and 3-D mixed media –– including a tradeswoman on a ladder wearing a diamond hardhat –– to bring viewers into the experiences of women who work in construction and skilled trades. The exhibition coincides with the 35th anniversary of federal affirmative action policies that opened construction jobs and apprenticeships to women. These aimed to bring women’s participation in the skilled trades to 25%, yet women today comprise 2.5% of the construction workforce. The installation celebrates tradeswomen and the industry, and invites viewers to consider what it means –– in any occupation –– to treat people on equal terms. Multi-disciplinary artist Susan Eisenberg was among the first women in the country to achieve journey-level status as a union electrician. A Resident Artist/Scholar at Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center, she is author of We’ll Call You If We Need You, a New York Times Notable Book; and two poetry collections.
