The Journal Gallery presents “Civic,” the gallery’s first solo exhibition with New York artist Graham Collins.
The exhibition features a new set of paintings and sculpture, part of an ongoing series that combines undressed wooden frames, glass, window tint and canvas. In “Civic,” the disparate materials retain their native qualities. The frames—made with timber from Schoharie County, New York, where the artist spends time—carry weight equal to the density of the window tint. Private considerations—his affection for a location, the experience of for-hire work—carry over into the construction of the independent identity of each painting. The artist’s approach builds on the craftsman’s intimacy with materials and predilection for understatement to achieve a result that is simultaneously raw and refined.
Graham Collins was born in 1980 in Washington, D.C. and received his MFA from Bard College in 2010. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. His work has been included in group shows at Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Derek Eller Gallery, New York, West Street Gallery, New York, Tät, Berlin, and most recently, Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York, among others. Collins’ solo exhibitions include “V8” at Halsey McKay, East Hampton, New York (2013); and “Shade Tree” at Soloway, Brooklyn, New York (2012).
