This event has ended.

The show consists of portraits of her family and pets, still lifes, farm animals and landscapes of her family's farm in the Catskills of New York State. Temma lives and paints on their farm in the town of Meredith, New York with her husband and four daughters where they raise grass fed beef and lamb. She was born and raised in Manhattan and got her BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1968 and has lived and painted her surroundings since then in New York, Paris, Reykjavík and upstate New York.

Louisa Matthiasdottir's and Leland Bell's two oil portraits, respectively, of their daughter Temma Bell, and Ms. Bell's portrait of her own daughter, all attest that painting is a powerful language that evolves through generations. Through structural clarity and psychological penetration, they prove that the painted portrait is still one of the most vital forms of portrayal.

— Lance Esplund, “Landscapes, Inner and Outer” Wall Street Journal, June 26, 2010

Temma Bell reminds us that painting is not only a rigorous calling but one thoroughly compatible with a wholesome life. Her upstate farm continues to provide the setting for keenly observed still lifes and landscapes, but this show emphasizes another kind of fauna: her four daughters, depicted in two large group portraits… What would Matisse have looked like as a Catskill painter? More than most artists, her paintings offer a hint.
