287 Spring presents New York artist Joe Fusaro, an artist who is inspired by the language of the human figure. Joe Fusaro’s drawings and mixed media works capture the basic emotion and fragility of simple gestures. Personal memories and photographs are transformed and reinterpreted into complex and dynamic compositions that capture movement without restraining it. In the presence of his large works on paper, the viewer is invited to become a witness and enter a sacred space that is created between Fusaro and his subjects.

Fusaro explains: “There is a delicate balance that plays a role in even the most active works like Siege and Passing. Lines and marks get moved and shifted, pulled in and blocked out over time, until a balance is reached”.

This layered abstraction allows one to draw from own experiences and memories in order to access the work. And Fusaro is consistently fascinated by the inevitable array of uncanny connections, questions and memories his work evokes. As Fusaro’s own movements enter the drawing, the intense physical activity requires a constant assessment and delicate equilibrium of all the tensions that shape the final work. In both the large, dynamic works and the smaller, more intimate collages Fusaro’s compositions capture the complex variety of human gestures, places and interactions in a state of continuous transformation.

Joe Fusaro received his Masters Degree in Education from the City University of New York and his Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from Hofstra University. He is an exhibiting artist, educator, and the Visual Arts Chair for the Nyack Public Schools in New York since 2003. Prior to his work in Nyack, he was a teacher and staff developer in the New York City school system for 13 years. Fusaro is currently an adjunct instructor for New York University’s Graduate Program in Art and Arts Professions, certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and has led staff development workshops for museums and cultural institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Art and Design over the past eight years. His recent exhibitions include solo shows at the Garnerville Arts Center in New York, Kickstart Gallery in New York City, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Fusaro also served as the summer artist-in-residence at Massachusetts College during 2005 and 2006.
