Perceptions is an interactive multimedia experience that allows the viewer to explore the distance between the intimate portrait and how it is perceived through the media. The show features oil sticker-like portraits of various icons shot by Aliya Naumoff over the past 10+years, from Iggy Pop to Marilyn Manson. The images are viewed by touching the plastic oil-filled sticker to reveal the portrait beneath the distorted layers. This tactile interaction mirrors the desire that people have to touch and know celebrities, while only being familiar with a fabricated image. Bringing us back to our childlike nature, Aliya invites you to please touch the work.
Aliya Naumoff was raised in a 200 year old old log home in Pennsylvania. She worked in her mother’s garden, then art gallery. Like any excitable teenager in a small town, Naumoff got into trouble with her skater punk friends sneaking out of the house going to concerts, playing drums in friend’s basements, and obsessing over Sonic Youth and Nirvana. She found photography to be a legal pastime and moved to Philadelphia to sharpen her skills at The University of The Arts. Naumoff moved to NYC to assist David LaChapelle who introduced her to the celebrity-fueled world of glitz and glamour. Her first shoot was Duran Duran and 10 naked models on a yacht on the Hudson River.
Since then, Naumoff has been shooting portraits of music and film icons for RollingStone, The New York Times Magazine, Vice, Vogue, and MTV.
