This event has ended.

The Hunter College East Harlem Art Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Portraits: My City, Myself, organized in collaboration with Studio in A School (STUDIO). The exhibition features a selection of artworks made by New York City public school students in STUDIOl programs in grades Pre-K through high school, and it celebrates the creativity and unique individual and collective experiences of young artists. This exhibition features more than 140 artworks and demonstrates how close observation and exercising imagination can inspire a deeper understanding of the people and places that young people interact with daily. These paintings, drawings, prints, collages, large-scale collaborative murals, and sculptures reveal how children see themselves, their families, communities, cultures, favorite places, and neighborhood streets. Through the art-making process, the students gain the tools to express themselves and respond to their surroundings.

Studio in a School is a model not-for-profit organization that has worked for more than 35 years to improve and support visual arts education both in and outside schools. Since the organization’s inception in 1977, Studio has enriched the lives of almost 800,000 children throughout all five boroughs with the creativity of the visual arts. Studio’s artist/instructors serve public schools, day care centers, and community-based organizations by leading classes in painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, 2D applied design, media tech, and sculpting.

Members of the artwork selection committee include: Estrellita Brodsky, Agnes Gund, Lynda C. Klich, Mariluz Hoyos, and Lusheena Warner. This exhibition is sponsored by Studio in a School’s Board of Directors in collaboration with the Hunter College East Harlem Art Gallery and the Hunter College President’s Office.
