This event has ended.

In his work, Patt explores his connection to and awareness of humanity’s concern with its own mortality through various symbols found in both occult and popular cultures. Drawing from influences including the Pennsylvania Dutch and post pop consumerism, Patt uses primary colors, repetition, and popular symbols to create a space where viewers are confronted with emblems of luck, the sanctuary of youth, and the hope and humor of daily life amongst the din of impending doom.
Still Here, which coincides with the prophesized end of the world as marked by the termination of the Mayan Calendar, embodies the search for and deciphering of codes and communications within a society that is constantly predicting its own demise– from Mt. Vesuvius or Hailey’s comet, to the panic of Y2K or the Large Hadron Collider. Through symmetrical rows of familiar talismans Patt presents a message that is simultaneously straightforward and enigmatic, and offers up an awareness of the commercialization of superstition and optimism that pervades our modern popular culture.

Lucky rabbits and hexes, and a replica military parachute are all presented with an aesthetic precision and order that highlights humanity’s desire for control and protection against the unknown. At times ironic and humorous, Patt’s work exposes a desire for preparedness in a world that can seem increasingly unpredictable. Viewed collectively, his pieces become a shrine to humanity’s material and ideological defenses against uncertainty.
