Michael Collins "Pictures from the Hoo Peninsula," rigorous views, taken with a large-format camera, reveal the nuanced beauty of the swampy landscape.

The Hoo Peninsula lies to the east of London between the estuaries of the Thames and the Medway. In the nineteenth century prison ships were moored along its shores, and it is the place that provided the setting for Magwitch’s flight at the beginning of Dickens’ “Great Expectations”. The muddy shores remain a netherworld, and Collins has photographed the remains of abandoned boats that have gradually sunk into the tidal marshes over the last century.

Referencing Constable’s landscapes and a quintessentially English melancholic beauty, Collins’ large-scale photographs have a degree of detail that is almost physical. The metamorphosis of these decomposing hulks in the cold light of winter days is both a study of the aesthetics of decay and an echo of Romanticism.
