Birgit Brenner Exhibition
Marc Straus
This event has ended.
MARC STRAUS announces an exhibition of new works by German artist Birgit Brenner. This will be the artist's first solo exhibition in the US and will inaugurate the gallery's new space at 299 Grand Street (between Allen and Eldridge).
For this, her first solo show in the U.S., Brenner has expanded her visual language with works not easily classified as painting, sculpture, or drawing. While structurally mining some Beuysian territory, Brenner's work is highly personal, concerned with social issues as loneliness, isolation, and aging. Some works evolve almost cinematically based on stories written by the artist.
Humans experience difficult contradictions and are buffeted by uncertainities and fears. We make do, we rationalize, but always the remnants have resonance; sometimes we are crippled and undone. Just knowing there is never certainty except mortality is a constant whisper.
Birgit Brenner is a fearless excavator of the psyche, ultimately no doubt her own, but still her works have humor and irony. Living Life means there is always something wonderful and hopeful and it is worth taking risks.
