This event has ended.

Barrupu Yunupiŋu is one of the most exciting contemporary artists working in Australia today, with the Art Gallery of New South Wales having recently acquired three of her paintings.

Barrupu is a senior artist from Yirrkala, a community on the east coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. She is the guardian of the sacred Fire story of her clan and that story is the great subject of her art.
In Aboriginal culture, fire remains an element not of destruction but of rebirth it is also part of every aspect of Aboriginal Life.
In the art of Barrupu Yunupiŋu all these facets of the Fire’s power and presence are fixed in an intricate mesh of pattern. These are pictures of extraordinary elegance and sophistication.
