Retrospective in a New York Minute.

Andy Warhol promised us fifteen minutes of fame but considering how much the population has increased and competing sources of information multiplied a minute should suffice.

Is it possible to present in a brief studio visit to a busy curator the work of a lifetime and make any sense? Like an elevator pitch this is an attempt to present a retrospective of renowned artist Rubén Ortiz Torres’s work in a New York minute to busy pedestrians in Manhattan. From his early work produced in Mexico City that included the representation of the local punk scene and a postcolonial adaptation of postmodernism to his use of new technologies and materials in California and other experiments in the Central American rain forest, the means streets of West Belfast and public spaces in New York he has been exploring the construction of language, mythology and subtext. This slide show made out of hundreds of art pieces constitutes a new artwork by itself and perhaps an ultimate compressed hybrid. It is also an effort to show an artist career without depending on high production values and the institutional spectacle associated with a major retrospective.

From near death experiences it is being said that you see a flashback of your entire life followed by a particular sense of peace and then a white light before you die.
