Dacia Gallery presents Virtu, the most comprehensive exhibition to date of sculptor Natalie Tyler’s work. Virtu is defined as having an appreciation of the curio and fine art. Finding inspiration from nature’s transformations, she explores the beauty in things that are otherwise forgotten. These objects become poetic symbols to describe deeper senses of being. Birth, growth, death and regeneration are threads that run throughout her work. Using bronze and glass she archives natural forms, creating an environment of discovery and closer inspection for the viewer. Similar to a cabinet of curiosities would have done in the past for the early practitioners of science. Her work highlighting aspects of nature’s wonders, giving importance back to the little amazing things, we often take for granted.
Originally from California, Natalie Tyler has lived on the East Coast for eight years. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts and received her BA from the University of California in Santa Cruz in 1997. Natalie additionally studied fine art at the Academy of Fine Art in Bologna, Italy, and art history at the DAMS Program of the University of Bologna. She was selected as an Artist-in-Residence at Cornell University, 2011-2012 where she received a Cornell Council for the Arts grant. Natalie has also been awarded full fellowships at both the Vermont Studio Center in 2008 and at The Art Students League of New York in 2010. Her work was reviewed well on RTE Ireland’s national radio arts program Arena, March 2010, and The Irish Times newspaper. Her sculptures have exhibited in New York, California, Ireland and London. Most recently, she was the curator of LUX-Art and Science Exhibition at Cornell University.
